Research Day at Watson

Some of you might know this already, but for the last two years I have been working on a book of my own, and guys, I am finally thisclose to being done! I finished the rough draft in August of this year and have been doing revisions. This isn’t the first book I’ve gotten this far on, but I have far more faith in this one than the others. I won’t get too much into the details, but it is a fantasy novel set in Denmark in 1525, under the reign of King Frederik I. There were some incredible things … Continue reading Research Day at Watson

2018 Reading Statistics

Hello, all! For the first time this year, I kept track of my reading statistics. I admittedly did not track these as regularly as I wish I had, but with the help of my memory and Goodreads, I was able to pull together for some statistics for you (and me!) to look at. Copy Statistics This year, I listened to 52 audiobooks, read 19 ebooks, and read 32 physical books. I got 28 of these books from Hoopla, 43 from my local library, one on the internet (Neil Gaiman had Ananzi Boys up for free listening for a few weeks), … Continue reading 2018 Reading Statistics

Classic Monsters: Zombies in Grant’s Feed

The world was a weird place before the Rising. After the Rising, with an estimated 87% of the populace living in fear of infection and unwilling to leave their homes, a new breed of reality star was born: the reporter. While you can be an Aggregator or a Stewart without risking yourself in the real world, it’s hard to be an Irwin, a Newsie, or even a really good Fictional if you cut yourself off that way. So we’re the ones that eat in restaurants and go to theme parks, the ones who visit National Parks even though we’d really … Continue reading Classic Monsters: Zombies in Grant’s Feed

Top 10 Longest Books I’ve Ever Read

I feel like long books get a lot of slack these days – they tend to be set aside in favor of quicker reads that you can cross off your TBR – and people that read long books are often seen as self-flagellating or braggarts or both. But I have read some wonderful long books over the years, and I love being immersed in rich worlds that offer me a long journey, rather than a quick resolution. Per That Artsy Reader Girl’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt, here are 10 of the best long books I have read. 1. Don Quixote … Continue reading Top 10 Longest Books I’ve Ever Read

Top 10 Authors I’d Love to Meet

One of the best things about reading is the way that a reader can get inside the author’s mind and live in the world he or she created. It always makes me feel like I have a direct line to the author – even though I have never met them! Thanks to That Artsy Reader Girl‘s prompt, here is a list of ten authors that I would love to meet, to know more about how they created their books. 1. Tamora Pierce Tamora Pierce was the first author that I really came to love. I loved the Lioness series, but … Continue reading Top 10 Authors I’d Love to Meet

Top 10 Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype

I have been burned by the popular vote just enough times that when I hear that a book is really popular, I usually decide that it isn’t for me. However, on occasion I do cautiously decide to read a book that has done really well. Here is a list of books that have really worked for me. Top 10 Tuesdays are hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. 1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter was, to my recollection, the first book I ever refused to read because it was so popular. My mom actually talked … Continue reading Top 10 Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype

Top 10 Books to Read by the Pool

Happy summer, everyone! This week is just one day late, but I loved it so much that I still wanted to do it. There is nothing better than relaxing at the pool (or the beach, for those of you lucky enough to be near one!) and taking the time to dive into a good book. When I read at the pool, I like to read books with a fast pace and engrossing plot, so I kept my list to those types – the kind that you just can’t put down. Top 10 Tuesdays are hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Action … Continue reading Top 10 Books to Read by the Pool

Top 10 Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In

One of the best parts of reading fantasy and speculative fiction is diving into an entirely new world and seeing what it might be like to live a different life. However, oftentimes the very elements that make the plot interesting also make the setting a miserable place to live for the characters. Here are a few books that I definitely would not want to live in. Top Ten Tuesdays are hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. 1. Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire I have mentioned before how much I love the concept of this book – there are doorways that … Continue reading Top 10 Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In
